7.25" x 9.25". Folded, black edged and written on 2 sides. Headed Berkeley Square, dated Apr.26/(1834)?, & written in the first person. The texts reads 'Sir John Hobhouse presents his compliments to Sir John Philippart and regrets that he has no other answer to give to the letter which he has received this morning than that which he has repeatedly sent to Sir John Philippart on the subject to which it refers. Sir John Hobhouse has neither the power nor the right of interference in that matter - but if referred to by those who have he will be very ready to give his opinion of Sir John Philipparts official services during the time he was Secretary at War. Sir J Hobhouse returns the Duke of Richmondís letter.' Sir John Hobhouse received his title upon the death of his father in August 1831 and was Secretary of War from February 1832 to March 1833. Sir John Philippart, best known as a military writer, was a clerk in the War Office from 1811 according to DNB. The paper is watermarked 1834. Price inc VAT
