London. Thomas Clio Rickman. 1819. pp. xv, facsmilie, 277, (vi) of adverts. Frontis, stained. 8vo. Original boards, later paper spine and label. Title marked, gatherings S and R some light staining. pp xiii/xiv with tear, repaired, not affecting the text. ODNB. Paine met and became friends with Rickman when he lived and workd in Lewes as an excise officer. In 1771 "he was nominated to press the excisemen's case for improved pay and conditions in London. He wrote his first political pamphlet, The Case of the Officers of Excise..." Paine stayed with Rickman on his return to England in 1791. In the autumn of 1802 Paine set off from Paris "‘for Havre-de-Grâce, accompanied by Rickman, who came to bid him farewell" before he sailed to America. Rickman’s is the 3rd biography of Paine and the first favourable one.
