It represents an Old Woman communicating to Lord Nithsdale's Tenants the news of his Escape to France'. 8vo. Half calf, marbled boards, front hinge beginning to spliut at lower end ODNB. Robert Hartley Cromek (1770 - 1812) engraver and literary entrepreneur, was born in Hull. He studied engraving under Francesco Bartolozzi, he then undertook engraving book illustrations, among them many by Thomas Stothard and Henry Fuseli. 'In 1809, while searching Scotland with Stothard for Burns materials, Cromek met the poet and songwriter Allan Cunningham in Dumfries. Over several months Cunningham provided Cromek with the contents for Remains of Nithsdale and Galloway song, with historical and traditional notices relative to the manners and customs of the peasantry (1810). Cunningham had in fact invented almost all of the purportedly ancient songs'
