The initial could be W or SC. ODNB. Chauncy Hare Townshend 1798 - 1868 (he changed the spelling of his surname in 1828) was a poet, collector and self confessed hypochondriac. This book was his first published work. He was friendly with Dickens who 'affectionately inscribed ' Great Expectations to him and said upon hearing of his death 'It is not a light thing to lose such a friend, and I truly loved him' (Letters of Charles Dickens, 1880, 372)
